Day 9 - Safe in Bermuda

SecureBermuda.jpg - 52168 Bytes We arrived in perfect weather at a perfect time of day (0930). We cleared customs and immigration and found a place to temporarily secure the boat stern to against a concert quay. A strong rope tied to the boat and connected to an underwater chain prevents the boat from going back against the concrete quay. Stern ropes hold the boat side ways and prevent it from being pulled forward. A long plank provides a path to the quay (see photo). We are stretched like a rubber band. This is a tricky maneuver to execute.

Thank goodness we got in yesterday. Today it is blowing 25-30 knots in the harbor and raining. 40 to 50 knots expected in the ocean .We would not have been able to back into the slip and would have had too anchor out, which would have been very inconvenient. Worse yet, we would have been a gale our last day at sea. All is well that ends well.

We got a lot done yesterday (Friday afternoon). We refueled one tank with diesel, filled the water tanks, arranged airplane flights home, and found a place to leave the boat until January. I had to write a letter to the Collector of Customs to request permission to leave the boat in Bermuda for up to two months. I managed to get to the customs office in Hamilton before their 1700 closing time.

Karen (my wife) and Marilyn (Ted’s wife) are in the British Virgin Island (BVI) where we had expected to meet them at the end of our sail for Thanks Giving. Ted and have tickets to fly to the BVI on Monday. We will transfer the boat to its permanent home on Sunday (tomorrow), assuming we can do it in the wind.

Many more stories to tell. This will be the last update until I return home after TG.
