The following description is based upon using a Logan model 3000 or 4000 hand held mat cutter which costs 25$ to 35$ as of 3/98.

If done carefully, the mat cutter will make a perfect 45 degree bevel cut for your mat window.

The Logan 4000 cutter has a scribe on it for drawing lines. If you have followed the directions above to mark you window, you wont need the scribe. In fact, the measuring method described above is more accurate than the scribe method.

The chrome handle is spring loaded and pushes down to allow the blade to come down and cut into the mat. The mat cutter is pulled, not pushed. The following directions will be based upon a right handed person. With the cutter on the table in front of you, the chrome handle is on the left. There is a screw on the bottom of the cutter to adjust the depth of the knife blade as it comes down into the mat. Push the blade down and make sure the blade comes out just far enough to cut through the mat.

Unlike the method used above to cut the mat boards where multiple passes are used to make the cut, the mat window cuts are done in one pass for each edge of the window.

Follow the instructions for cutting mat windows.
