Hinging the Picture

The picture is attached to the backing board, not the mat. It is actually hinged to the backing board. The first thing to do is make a hinge for the picture with acid free paper or linen. For photos and other small pictures a paper hinge will be fine. The hinges can be approximately ½ x 1 inches. Fold each hinge in half and put acid free glue on one half of it. Paste the hinges on the underside of the picture in the top right and left hand corners. The top half of the hinge which is not glued should be extending above the picture.

Position the picture so that it is exactly centered the way you want it. Do not do this with your fingers. They will leave grease prints on your picture and potentially damage it permanently. A large eraser placed in the center of the picture is a good tool since it will hold the picture down and can be easily used as a knob to slide the picture exactly where you want it.

Once you have the picture positioned, leave the eraser on the picture to hold it down and lift the mat up. You are know ready to fasten the hinges. The hinges extend above the picture and are simply taped to the backing foam. Use the same hinge tape the you used to connect the mat to the backing foam. Cut pieces of tape wider than the hinge and simple tape over them to fasten them to the backing board. Your picture is now matted and can be put in the frame.
